    Yes — you can heat press polyester, as long as you keep the temperature low and put something between the platen and the fabric. The safe working range for iron-on vinyl on poly is roughly 270-300°F for 10 to 15 seconds, with a Teflon sheet or parchment over the top.

    Polyester is basically a plastic. Crank the heat like you would for a cotton tee and it scorches, glazes, or leaves a shiny press-shaped rectangle that never comes out. The whole game with poly is heat management: enough to bond the vinyl, not enough to cook the shirt.

  3. The scorch warning — and dye migration, the bigger headache

    Two things go wrong with polyester, and the second one catches most people out.

    Scorch is the obvious one. Too hot or too long and poly develops a permanent gloss — a shiny rectangle exactly where the platen sat. On darker fabric it can yellow. There's no rescuing it; you re-press onto a fresh shirt and eat the loss.

    Dye migration is the sneaky one. Heat pulls the dye out of the polyester and floats it up into your vinyl, so crisp white HTV on a red jersey turns pink a day or two after you pressed it. It gets worse with higher temps and longer dwell times — which is the whole reason you keep poly low and quick. Reds, maroons, and bright athletic colors are the worst offenders. Pressing light vinyl on a bold poly color? Reach for a dye-blocking HTV or lay down a blockout barrier first.

  4. Sublimation flips the rule

    Worth flagging, because it seems to contradict everything above: sublimation actually wants polyester, and it wants it hot. Sublimation ink only bonds to poly, and you press it around 385-400°F for 45-60 seconds.

    That's scorching territory for HTV, but sublimation blanks are built for it, and the shine risk is managed with fresh parchment and even pressure. So "can you heat press polyester" really has two answers depending on what's in your hand: low and careful for vinyl, hot and committed for sublimation.

  5. How to press poly without wrecking it

    A short routine that saves blanks:

    • Preheat the garment 2-3 seconds to flash off moisture, then lay your design.
    • Always cover it — Teflon or plain parchment between the platen and the vinyl.
    • Start at 270°F. Only bump the temp if the film genuinely isn't sticking after a proper press.
    • Keep it to 10-15 seconds. If you spot shine, cut the time and re-press in two shorter bursts.
    • Medium, even pressure. No rocking, no leaning on one corner.
    • Let it cool before you tug-test — poly bonds finish setting as they come down in temperature.
  6. When to switch blanks instead

    Sometimes the fabric just isn't worth the fight. Cheap red or neon poly will migrate no matter how careful you are, and no setting saves a $4 blank that's determined to bleed.

    If a scrap test comes back pink, don't chase it. Either move to a dye-blocker HTV rated for polyester, or grab a poly blank made for sublimation and print it that way. Your time's worth more than the shirt.
