Every heat press setting on one chart
Iron-on vinyl? 305°F, 10 to 15 seconds, medium pressure, done. Sublimation is a different animal — it runs hot, 385 to 400°F, and you sit on it for the best part of a minute. DTF splits the difference at around 310°F for 15 seconds, but you have to really lean on it.
Everything below is a spin on those three. I've set °F next to °C, the press time, how hard to squeeze, and the bit everyone skims past: when to peel. I've killed more shirts to a bad peel than to a bad temperature, and it isn't close.

Ranges reflect real brand and blank variation — always check the sheet your material shipped with. One thing before you trust a single number here. Your press is almost certainly lying to you — a cheap clamshell can read 20 to 30°F under what the platen is actually doing. An infrared thermometer sorts it out, or a temperature strip if you're on a budget.
And test on a scrap. Yeah, everyone says it. But a wasted four-inch square of vinyl beats a ruined shirt, and no two fabrics ever quite behave the same.
Light, medium, firm: what pressure actually means
Barely anyone talks about pressure, which is strange, because it's half of whether a transfer sticks. So here's what the three settings actually feel like at the handle when you close a clamshell or a swing-away:
- Light — the press basically shuts under its own weight, the way a laptop lid does. Delicate sublimation and anything that shows press lines lives here.
- Medium — real resistance now, and you're pushing to snap the latch closed. This is your HTV default.
- Firm — both hands, shoulder into it, the handle fighting you the whole way down. DTF, thick canvas, mugs, hard substrates.
No pressure dial on your machine? Slide a pressing pillow or a thicker pad under the garment. Raising the surface does the same thing — it forces a tighter close.
Peel hot, warm, or cold?
There's a reason "hot peel" or "cold peel" is printed on every roll. Pull a cold-peel film while it's still warm and the design lifts straight back off with the carrier — I've done it, sworn at it, moved on. Three types:
- Hot peel — carrier comes off the second the press cracks open, still steaming. Fast, but slip and the design skids sideways.
- Warm peel — count to five, maybe ten, then peel. The forgiving middle ground where most HTV sits.
- Cold peel — dead cold, room temperature, no cheating. Printable film and most DTF demand it, and some holographic too, so read the roll. Rushing a cold peel is the number-one beginner mistake, full stop.
HTV and iron-on vinyl, dialed in
Standard HTV — Siser EasyWeed, Cricut Everyday Iron-On — is the forgiving one. 305 to 315°F, medium pressure, 10 to 15 seconds. Watch the brand, though. EasyWeed's happy at 305°F for 10 to 15, while Cricut's EasyPress likes it a shade hotter at 315°F and wants a longer hold, closer to 30 seconds, on Everyday Iron-On.
Glitter and flock ask for more — 320°F. The texture holds the adhesive up off the fabric, so it needs the extra heat to bite through. Layering two colors? Tack the bottom one for 2 or 3 seconds, drop the top color on, then one proper press at the very end. Stack full presses on the same spot and you cook that first layer dull.
Sublimation: hot, fast, one shot
Sublimation is polyester-only, or a poly-coated blank. The ink flashes to gas and dyes the fibers themselves, so on cotton it just rinses out in the first wash — no amount of heat saves it. Set 385 to 400°F, 45 to 60 seconds, light to medium pressure.
Lint-roll the blank first. One stray hair and you've got a white line through the print. When the timer beeps, peel now and lift straight up — no sideways drag, because any wobble double-images it and that ghosting can't be fixed. Butcher paper above and below keeps stray ink off your platen.
DTF is a two-press job
DTF catches people out because it's two presses wearing the disguise of one. First, pre-press the bare garment for 2 to 4 seconds, just to flatten it and drive the moisture out. Then the film goes down: 300 to 320°F, 15 to 20 seconds, firm pressure.
Now peel. Most DTF is a cold peel, so let it go properly stone cold — but hot-peel films exist too, so check what came in the box. Cover the design with parchment or a Teflon sheet and hit it again for 10 to 15 seconds. That second press is the one that locks the adhesive and buys you the stretch and the wash resistance. Skip it and it starts cracking by week three.
Tumblers and mugs are the wild card
Tumblers and mugs are where a tidy chart quietly falls apart. A mug press, a convection oven, a shrink-wrap tumbler setup — three different tools, three different sets of numbers, and every blank brand prints its own on top of that.
Ballpark only. Ceramic mugs on a mug press run 350 to 400°F, anywhere from 90 seconds to three and a half minutes. Stainless tumblers wrapped in shrink film bake in a convection oven at 360 to 400°F for 4 to 6 minutes. The ranges are wide on purpose — trust the slip in the box over any generic chart, this one included.
What scorches: fabric limits
The fabric sets your ceiling, not the vinyl. Cotton's the workhorse — it shrugs off heat up to around 360°F, which is exactly why it forgives nearly every HTV setting you throw at it.
Polyester is the diva. Push past 280 or so and it scorches, glazes, or the shirt's own dye creeps up into your vinyl and turns crisp white HTV a lovely shade of pink. On poly: drop to 270 to 280°F, hold it a touch longer, cover sheet every single time. Nylon and coated waterproof fabrics want low heat and a quick in-and-out — test a hidden seam first.
Five mistakes that waste blanks
A few thousand presses in, it's the same short list of blunders behind nearly every blank I've wrecked:
- Believing the dial. It reads 20 to 30°F off — verify with a strip or an IR gun.
- Skipping the pre-press. A damp shirt starves both HTV and DTF of adhesion; give it 2 to 3 seconds first.
- Peeling cold-peel film hot. Just wait. Walk away from the press if you have to.
- Faking the pressure. A closed press isn't a firm one — put your weight behind DTF and thick fabric.
- Re-heating one spot for layers. Tack the base, then one full press right at the very end.
